Self Managed Super Funds

Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF) are a specialist area. They are a terrific superannuation vehicle with the main benefits being Control and transparency. As Trustees of your own Fund you have control of the investments and transparency of the Investment portfolio and associated fees.

Do you know where your retirement funds are invested?

This is very different to some retail and Industry Funds where you have no control over where your money is invested and in a lot of cases are unaware of what fees you are paying to the adviser, administration and the Company (eg Advertising and directors fees).

Are you aware of the options you have to grow your nest egg?

SMSF’s allow members to utilise their combined balances and can purchase assets such as direct shares and property.

It is also possible to borrow to purchase an asset such as property, however extreme caution needs to be applied and ensure you are being guided by a specialist.

This strategy has become the “flavor of the month” for many property promoters and some finance brokers. They are placing people in positions they did not intend to be in or should not be in.

There are many advantages of a SMSF but you need appropriate help and guidance from qualified Specialist Advisers.

Is the person looking after your funds fully qualified to do so?

The Self Managed Super Fund Professionals association of Australia (SPAA) is the professional body setting the benchmark for appropriately qualified members to be classified as “Specialist”. There are many “advisers” spruiking themselves as SMSF experts so ensure you engage a qualified and registered specialist.

To complete an overall SMSF service offering, our alliance partners Marlston Taxation and Business Advisers are in-house to take care of any administration, Tax and Audit needs.
